Making Money Off Sex (Quietly)
Monday November 6, 2006
I've always maintained that while porn will never be completely mainstream, sex toys are heading for the shelves of Wal-Mart sometime soon. SSL, the parent company that owns Durex caused a stir (and a financial boom for shareholders) last year when they got their new line of vibrators in pharmacies in the UK, and popular drug store chains in Canada.
The climb to the top continues with the introduction of Kama Sutra products to Duane Read drugstores in Manhattan. The Kama Sutra line, which offer high end packaging on “sensual” products like edible warming oils, scented and flavored talcs, and a line of lubricants, have been one of the only brand names in sex stores for years.
This is hardly the first time a drug store or non-adult store has carried flavored lotions, but the size of Duane Reade must be attracting attention.
This isn't yet an example of the complete integration of sex toys into mainstream culture, as is evidenced by Duane Reade's corporate silence on the new product lines. All the press about this has been generated by the Kama Sutra company and not Duane Reade, whose spokespeople refused to comment in the press.
